Journey's debut album premiered in 1975. The early music was a combination of fusion rock, with heavy latin influences remeniscient of the involvement of Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie in Santana. The music progressed into a more vocal oriented rock in the mid-seventies, and travelled down the pop-rock avenue in the late-seventies to early eighties. The album Escape brought about their zenith of popularity. After Raised on Radio was released and it's following tour in 1986-87, Journey did not perform live again as a group until 1996 with their reunion effort Trial By Fire. Following a rock-climbing accident on Maui in preparation for the Trial By Fire supporting tour, Steve Perry was sidelined. After waiting until 1998, the band moved on with Steve Augeri as the new lead vocalist. Steve Smith left the band at this time and drummer Deen Castronovo joined. The song Remember Me was performed for the soundtrack CD for the movie Armagedon. The band toured in 1998 and 1999, before releasing Arrival in 2001. Subsequent tours followed, and the band later released a four-track EP called Red 13. in 2005 the band released Generations.
Journey Released in April 1975, the debut Journey album rampaged on a fiery instrumental sound interspersed with a few vocals by Rolie, a superbly proficient musicianly performance built on dense chords and complex time changes. "Fusion music was very popular at the time," said Rolie. "We figured, we're players--let's do it."

Look Into the Future Guitarist George Tickner left the band by the time Journey recorded this album. "I'm Gonna Leave You," a song on this album with an unusual shuffle but unique structure bears his imprint. Using the odd 5/4 time signature required a certain amount of musicianship, obviously appreciated by some of the band's peers. After touring with Journey during this period and hearing the band perform this song every night, Kansas went home and borrowed the song's major motif for "Carry On Wayward Son"

Infinity Journey's manager, Bill Graham called the Infinity album "a lovely monster." The chart toppers were "Wheel In the Sky," "Anytime," "Lights," and "Just the Same Way" ...reaching #57, #83, #68, #58 respectively. In reference to Journey's addition of Steve Perry as lead vocalist, Gregg Rolie recalls: "I wasn't completely sold on Perry, I don't think anybody was." But backstage at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernadino, Perry strapped on a bass and played a song he had nearly completed called Lights and the other musicians began to harmonize along with him. "It dawned on me right then that this could really be great" lie.

Dream After Dream In Japan, following the five sold-out shows in Osaka and Tokyo, Journey engaged in another unconventional experiment destined never to be heard in the U.S. The almost all instrumental album, released only in Japan, captured Journey improvising on bits of melodies and phrases guitarist Schon supplied. Rolie found himself slamming out dissonant chords in front of a movie screen, ad libbing background music to a desert scene. The entire project showed Journey in an unvarnished way the band hadn't dared since the very earliest days. In Japan the band was stitching together a nearly abstract tapestry of sound, confident and colorful in ways less creative musicians could never have imagined.

Captured The double-album Captured was a work recorded live in Detroit, Michigan. All of the tracks are live with the exception of "Party's Over" ("Hopelessly In Love"). The album remains a favorite with many because it captures some of the live energy only a Journey concert can provide.

Escape Jonathan Cain, who joined the band during this era and wrote lyrics on each song on this album, said: "The thing that was missing was writing our audience into our songs, those people who were so spiritual and loyal to the band.....What I changed about Journey is that I started writing about the people who cared about the band."
The first two singles from the album, "Who's Cryin' Now" and "Don't Stop Believin'," both stormed the Top Ten and the third, a slow, spare ballad called "Open Arms" was scorching up the charts. The album struck No. 1, and sales quickly pushed past the 5 million mark. Journey had arrived.

Frontiers Frontiers followed the ever-popular Escape album and gave the members of Journey a chance to take music in several progressive, experimental directions. While some band members found this exciting, others found it unfamiliar, if not uncomfortable. The following album would leave this direction and dwell in the pop music realm, a safer genre for some.

Raised On Radio Raised On Radio was the product of Journey in the Eighties, after a much needed vacation. Ballads were the order of the day, intermixed with some more upbeat songs. Smith and Valory did not perform on the supporting tour, and following this tour, the band would take a break until getting back together to create the Trial By Fire album in 1996. The album's first single, "Be Good To Yourself," was released in April 1996, and coasted into the top ten without benefit of any supporting videos.

Greatest Hits Greatest Hits was released in 1998, and gave a public something of a collection of Journey hits to listen to. Included on this album were the singles "Only the Young" and "Ask the Lonely," both of which were soundtrack themes and had been removed from the Frontiers lineup before that album was released. Columbia continues to sell Journey's Greatest Hits in startling numbers. If you have only one Journey album, this would be the one to have.

Trila By Fire A Journey reunion in 1996 produced Trial By Fire, a brilliantly mature offering highlighting the growth of the five mature and consumate musicians. This album offered the group's first song ever to be nominated for a grammy award, "When You Love A Woman," and several rockers, "Message Of Love," "Can't Tame the Lion," and  "Castles Burning," with the rest of the 14 track album being filled out with ballads and a catchy regae-ish toon. The single release of "Message Of Love/When You Love A Woman" also featured "Open Arms."

In 1998 while Journey fans waited patiently for the supporting Trial By Fire tour, which was not to happen, the record label released Greatest Hits Live. This album offers a glimpse of past tour experiences to those not familiar with a Journey concert, at least in audio format.

This is a limited German reissue of 1988 'Best Of' compilation for the Journey, pressed onto a gold disc. 15 tracks including, 'Who's Crying Now', 'Don't Stop Believin'', 'Open Arms' and 'Wheel in the Sky'. 2000 release. Standard jewel case housed in a slipcase.
This is a combination pack with three good albums at a nice price. One thing to remember about purchasing re-released packages like this, however, is that artists do not always make any profit from sales of repackaged collections.

This is another of those collections, a sort of updated best-of, if you will. It is an all-around good compilation, but contains no previously unreleased songs. There were rumors at the time of its release that this was a technical way of satisfying contract obligations in order to sever ties between the band and Steve Perry. This remains speculation, and will never be anything more than speculation for those not privy to the legalities of the contract negotiations. This would make a nice collection to your CD changer, but please purchase it through the official band web site in order to ensure the band gets at least some of the profit for their music.

Red 13 started off as an offering to the fans. Journey is very interactive on tour, and offers a lot of new material to the fans, some of which it may release if response is favorable. The response was so good over the new material on the 1999 tour that some of the new material ended up on Arrival. Similarly, this is a 4-track extended play disc which offers a raw-edge hard rocking sound. The disc was available only through the fan club and at concerts as shown at the left.
